What to do for your hair during the dog days of summer?

By: jonric

Using the right products and providing the proper maintenance to your hair is vital to summer hair care. Humidity causes frizz to your hair. A styling aid with U.V. protection is recommended after a shower or swim to provide “shine and finish.” This provides a U.V. filter that will form an invisible screen to protect the hair from the damaging drying effects of the sun, salt and chlorine. Sun, wind, salt, and chlorine are all harsh on your hair. Heat has a drying effect on your hair. The hair's moisture content is reduced and it loses its softness. Wind dries out the hair and increases static electricity. The sun’s UV rays weaken the hair and fade the color. Salt and chlorine just attack the hair. All these factors leave your hair damaged. The hair cuticle opens up, the hair breaks, and split ends appear. The result is dry, dull and impossible to style hair. Using a styling aid with U.V. protection allows the hair to dry with natural volume but without the frizz, giving your blow-dryer and hair a rest. To “smooth down the cuticle,” the right products are a must. A good leave-in treatment is also recommended.

Sometimes styling can be an issue. Should you desire to keep it simple, then “a pulled back” ponytail is an option. The wet look is another quick low maintenance option. Pretty headbands are another great option, providing instant style for almost any occassion. Of course, casual styling doesn’t mean easing up on hair care. Longer styles need nurturing, starting with shampoos and conditioners that smooth and strengthen the hair. A good shampoo and conditioner helps hair fibers maintain the right moisture level so the hair fibers won’t dry out or swell with humidity and cause frizz. A proper moisture balance also makes hair stronger; resisting breakage allows for a smoother finish. Split ends are a big threat to your hair. Fight split-ends with a Split End Protector.

Summer is the season when we all want to go lighter, but since the sun will exaggerate what is done in the salon, stick to natural-looking color. Use a color-safe shampoo to make your shade last longer.
