The Imaginative - Napster - At This Instant Presents Latest Products

By: Isaiah Henry

Once the only big name music downloading site, Napster has been joined by many others over the years. Napster was known, in the early stages, for providing pirated music. That ended quickly when Napster met with the money and might of the music industry that fought them each step of the way. At its height, 500,000 songs were being downloaded from Napster daily that was back when they were pretty much the only game in town.

Their latest attempt at continual growth is to offer MP3 Downloads. Once the pioneer in the music downloading field, other sites already offer this service. Among their competition are MP3.Com, Internet Music Underground Archive, LiquidAudio and RealAudio. While these sights dont have the massive libraries that Apples iTunes has, they can certainly be considered competitive. Some of the newer recording artists also offer MP3 downloads on their websites; they arent major competition, though, because they offer only their own music.

So far, the vast majority of major record labels continue to hold back from allowing their music to be download as MP3 files on music download sites that is, unless they can be assured that proper protection and technology is in place. The significant decline in CD sales may eventually force record labels to rethink their decisions. What may well be the final catalyst for record companies to release some control is the overwhelming success of Apple, with its iPod and iTunes Music Store. While Apple does not produce the only MP3 players (others like Zune do too), they certainly produce the most popular and most widely used.

Mr. Robert Enderle, Principal Analyst for the Enderle Group, is among the skeptics who are not entirely sure Napster can be successful with MP3 downloads. He has stated I cannot picture many iPod and iTunes users shifting to Napster since iTunes software is so integrated with Apple music. He is not alone in this feeling; other experts have expressed the same concerns.

Robert Enderle feels Napster might have a better chance by choosing their competition carefully. Enderle stated if Napster focused on competing with Amazon they would have a much greater chance of being successful. Amazon is a particularly good target for Napster because they are not well known as a music download site they are perhaps best know for selling books and many other things.

The music industry continues to evolve and change and so does Napster. Gorog hopes they will both continue to grow and prosper at unprecedented rates.
